Fonda later said she learned of Turner’s infidelity about a month after the wedding. They announced a separation in 2000 and Fonda filed for divorce in April 2001, calling the marriage "irretrievably broken." Yet the two remained on good terms—Fonda has referred to him as her "favorite ex-husband" and has said, "Life is too short to be fighting." Her memoir also recalls moments of intimacy and shared laughter that kept them close.
The pair co-founded the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power and Potential (GCAPP) in 1995; Fonda became emotional at the charity’s 30th EmPower event on Nov. 13, crediting Turner’s support. Turner died on a Wednesday, May 6, at 87; his cause of death had not been disclosed, and he had revealed a 2018 diagnosis of Lewy body dementia. CNN CEO Mark Thompson praised Turner’s leadership and influence after his passing.
