Balfe, 46, says becoming a mother has altered how she chooses places to stay: she looks for suites with separate bedrooms and living areas so her son can be put to bed without the adults being stuck in the dark. She finds open-plan suites impractical for their needs.

The actress says her five-year-old, whom she has with husband Tony McGill, is an excellent traveler and handled many trips to Los Angeles well. She has largely avoided tablet use, praising his appetite for books and games, though he did watch a lot of TV on one recent long-haul flight.
